How to Prioritize Yourself Without Guilt (and Why It Feels So Hard)
Relation Matters | JUN 17
If prioritizing yourself feels hard or brings guilt, this article explores why - and how to gently begin choosing yourself again.
Many women know they should prioritize themselves.
But when it comes to actually doing it, guilt, discomfort, or resistance can show up.
If this is you, there’s nothing wrong with you.
Often, this is something your nervous system has learned over time:
caring for others feels safe
resting can feel “wrong”
saying no can feel uncomfortable
These patterns are not personal flaws - they are protective adaptations.
This doesn’t require big change.
Start small:
Pause before saying yes
Check in with yourself once a day
Notice guilt without acting on it
Add small moments of care into your day
Allow your needs to matter too
Over time, these small shifts begin to rebuild self-trust.
As you begin prioritizing yourself in small ways, you may notice:
more grounding
more clarity
a stronger sense of self
Not instantly - but gradually.
If this is something you’re working through, support can help.
At Relation Matters, I support women in reconnecting with themselves through nervous system regulation and relational counselling.
