In our last blog, we explored the big picture: the mind and the body both hold the keys to healing. But what does that look like in real life? Let’s break it down.

🧠 Talk Therapy: Top-Down Support

Most people are familiar with talk therapy. You sit with a trained therapist and explore your thoughts, feelings, memories, and relationships. This “top-down” approach works with the parts of your brain that help you make sense of your story.

Benefits of talk therapy:

  • Helps you understand patterns and where they came from

  • Gives you new tools to reframe beliefs and make conscious choices

  • Builds connection and trust in a safe, non-judgmental relationship

  • Supports mental clarity, better boundaries, and more satisfying relationships

It’s especially helpful when you feel ready to process events or patterns with words, and when your nervous system can tolerate staying present to your story.

🫶 Somatic Therapy: Bottom-Up Support

Somatic means of the body. Somatic therapy brings your awareness to how your body holds experiences - tension, stuck energy, numbness, or activation. Instead of only talking about what happened, you pay attention to how it feels right now.

Benefits of somatic therapy:

  • Helps you notice and safely release stuck survival energy (fight, flight, freeze)

  • Builds a sense of inner safety and self-regulation

  • Supports trauma healing by working with the nervous system

  • Encourages connection to the present moment


This approach is gentle and slow - it’s not about re-living trauma, but rather titrating small pieces, so your body learns that it’s safe to let go.

🌿 Choosing What’s Right for You

There’s no wrong place to start. Some people begin with talk therapy and later discover somatic work helps them go deeper. Others start with somatic therapy because words feel overwhelming or unavailable.
