When it comes to healing, there’s no one-size-fits-all path. Life shapes us in many ways - through our thoughts, our emotions, and our bodies. Sometimes, we try to think our way out of old patterns; other times, our bodies hold on to stress, memories, and survival responses long after our minds have moved on.

At Relation Matters, we believe real, lasting healing happens when we honour both: mind and body.

In therapy, you’ll often hear about top-down and bottom-up approaches.

✨ Top-down means starting with your mind - your thoughts, beliefs, and stories - and working down to influence your emotions and body.

✨ Bottom-up means starting with your body - your sensations, breath, and nervous system - and working up to help shift your thoughts, emotions, and reactions.

For example, you might notice how anxiety before a big presentation shows up as racing thoughts (top-down), but also as a pounding heart and tight chest (bottom-up). Both matter. Both can be supported.

Modern research in neuroscience and trauma teaches us that sometimes talking alone isn’t enough. Our survival responses - fight, flight, freeze, or fawn - can live deep in our nervous system, out of reach of words. That’s why integrating both pathways creates a bridge for real, sustainable change.

This month, we’re exploring how these healing pathways work - so you can feel empowered to choose the kind of support that helps you feel safe, seen, and whole.

Stay tuned! Next week, we’ll look at how talk therapy and somatic therapy actually work in practice.
